Predictable crowds at Oxford walls means with a little planning you can virtually always find space to boulder on the problems you want to work on.
Quieter Weekday Windows
Tuesday to Thursday, 10am-12pm – This is the quietest period in the week when most people are at work or at university attending lectures. It’s the perfect time for you to ascend the walls you wish to without any interruptions.
Early Mornings for Focused Training
Working a problem without interruption: Opening time is the best time to work on problems. Walls are almost always empty at opening time on weekdays and the holds are fresh and clean of dust and chalk.
Lunchtime Is a Mixed Bet
You will find that the 12pm to 2pm slot fills up extremely quickly around the city centre and that arriving at 12 rather than 30 minutes later will mean that you beat the office crowds streaming in to climb for lunch.
Weekend Timing
So Saturday morning between 9am and 11am can be a good time to go bouldering. Later in the afternoon is when things start to get very busy. Sunday evening around 6pm onwards can be good too as things tend to die down.
Seasonal Patterns in Oxford
Oxford’s bouldering walls have a large student population which can mean walls are very busy during term time (Oct – Jan). Surprisingly the school holiday weeks can be very quiet indeed. This can make for a great time to come and practice on the walls, if you are a regular user of Bouldering Oxford you will soon realise the difference between a mid-term Wednesday and a half-term Wednesday!
A little flexibility in your schedule can go a long way to getting the most out of your bouldering.
