Traveling with a dog

Traveling with a dog

Do you plan to travel with your dog? Going on vacation or a day trip with your dog can be heaps of fun. It’s important to be well-prepared to make things run as smoothly as possible. Failing to prepare and travelling can become a nightmare pretty quickly!

The first important thing to note is that your dog must wear a collar with identification information on it at this time. Microchipping your dog is now also required by law.

If your dog has not been trained with at least basic training, it may be better to use a boarding kennel or dog-sitter while you go. You need your dog to behave well when travelling in a vehicle.

Other things that need to be planned include where the dog will be positioned in the vehicle, pet-friendly accommodations and activities to keep your dog active and busy as you go.

Air travel

Unless you emigrate, air travel should only be a last resort for most dogs. We do not see them as cargo, but the flight companies do, and they will be loaded with cargo in the aircraft. Even for a relaxed, quiet dog, this would not be the most pleasant experience. If your dog is small, you may be in luck though as some airlines will allow you to bring your pet in a carrier on to the aircraft as long as it can be stored under the seat in front of you.

Car travel

This is definitely the easiest way to travel with your dog. Your dog will be most familiar with this form of transport as well, from having taken trips to the vet and the park etc. Some dogs do experience anxiety with car travel, so it is always best to get them used to driving in the car from an early age. Try a short trip for some time to get your dog used to car trips if he is worried. Maybe your dog had a bad experience at the vets and always thinks that is where you’re going.

Future plan

If your dog is happy to ride in the car, it’s time to plan ahead for car trips. Plan plenty of breaks along the way, at least every 3 hours for a chance to relieve himself, have a drink and a bit of exercise. Plan your route ahead of time so you know which place is best and most convenient to stop for a break at regular intervals.
