What is a Cavity? How to Tell If You Have One and How to Prevent Them!

Most of us know that cavities are formed inside the teeth when they get blocked with food particles, bacteria, plaque, etc. But what exactly is a cavity? The simplest definition is that a cavity is an empty space caused by decay. A cavity can be filled with tooth-coloured substance known as a filling. The process of filling a cavity usually takes less than 1 minute and will leave no visible marks on the exterior surface of the tooth.

The best way to prevent cavities is to brush your teeth after meals and floss daily. Brushing removes any food particles that can get trapped between the teeth and fill a cavity. Flossing removes plaque which can build up between the teeth and can be very difficult to remove especially if the plaque is not removed by brushing. Toothpastes which include whitening agents and cavity-fighting ingredients can also help to prevent cavities. Some toothpastes also have other ingredients which can help to prevent cavities. If you already have cavities, consulting your dentist is the best way to learn about cavities and what can be done to prevent them from getting worse. Some cavities are caused by gum disease, others by tooth decay, which can be prevented by dental hygiene practices such as brushing and flossing. If there are obvious signs of a cavity such as a black spot on the exterior of the tooth or visible tooth enamel which has lost its cover, it is best to visit your dentist immediately for proper dental care.
